The craziest thing about China is how cheap things are here. We are only eating two meals a day for starters cos the brekky here is so shit, but meals out at restaurants cost NZ$3.00 plus a drink. Full strength 600mL beer costs at most NZ$1, at the cheapest ard 20c. The strangest thing is heading to kit up your room with the equivalant of NZ$20 and knowing oyu can buy lunch with the change.
Hitting the books
Class started today with the realisation that they weren’t kidding about that immersion thing. Still was quite easy and am starting to get truly settled in Dalian though I certainly wouldn’t sya I am comfortable yet. Meet a load of French and Japanese people and still have the army of Russians staying at my hostel to meet.
All in all things are going great. Even got a cellphone that works now!
Pretty Optimistic Now!
Turns out theres an American at the hostel too, so a bit of a sigh of relief not to mention the french folk whose English is pretty good. Rooms are pretty basic and a strange smell is still enamating from my bathroom (I swear its not my fault).
American was offered a language teaching job at NZ$25/hour under the table so are lookingo to get the same so I can finance some travel around China. All in all things are looking good, just got entrance exam to get through tomorrow.
Dalian
Arrived Dalian. Turns out only other English speaker here is Anthony (NZ classmate). Could be a very long few months until I learn Chinese!
Beijing
Have been in Beijing for 3 days now, starting the 4th right now with a Great Wall tour in less than a hour.
Seen heaps over last few days and my brain really hasn’t caught up with the reality of what I am in for. Just waiting for culture shock to hit me.
Off to Dalian on Wed to find home for next few months and settle.
